One day, I was wondering why the internet didn't feel the same as before. I grew up fascinated by the early days of the internet, where there was novelty and randomness.
I moved around a lot as a child, and there were times in between where I didn't have friends in a new location. The internet was the place I went to play games with my friends, meet strangers, and always come back to.
Ragnarok Online was my favorite game. I created guilds and made friendships. The funny thing about Ragnarok, looking back, is that the fun wasn't about the daily grind or PvP. What I remember most is Prontera: merchants on the street, full of people, and a genuine feeling of being in the presence of others.
This is all nostalgia now. Whether it's MMOs or random chats, everything has changed. It might be that I'm getting old, but a lot of the internet feels like it's about speed, money, productivity, automation, and influencers. The dopamine is there while you're scrolling endless new content, but it lacks the true sense of randomness and connection that we felt a long time ago.
I tried going to some random anonymous chat sites just to see what it's like. There was immense pressure for someone who's introverted, being matched one-on-one right away with a complete stranger (who usually has a specific purpose). It wasn't at all what I expected.
What I actually wanted was closer to Prontera than a roulette with a stranger. One room, no matching. You can lurk, read the chat, see who wandered in, and only talk when you feel like it. Nobody is waiting for you to say something.
This is why I made this as my first side project. Not to make money or become famous, but to recreate the experience that I miss. I wanted a last place standing, a tiny oasis in the sea of modern dopamine machines. The place where you can go back to any time, even years later.
I wouldn't have started this project before AI, because I know how hard it is to build and maintain a site that deals with real-time WebSockets. However, with the help of AI and modern tooling, I feel that it is now possible to create and manage a site like this without too much cost.
My vision isn't to build a large platform, but to build a small local cafe. No pressure to join, somewhere you can always go back to if you are ever bored and see what others are doing. No pressure to chat, no ads, just being present with others. Play a small minigame if you'd like.
Most importantly, have fun and make memories like before. Even if a few people can remember this site and have fun, I have accomplished my objective.
Over time, I'd like this place to become more than a chat room. A small persistent world where familiar names return, where you can leave traces of your visit, play a simple game while waiting for someone to talk to, and slowly build a sense of place. Not a social network chasing engagement, but a tiny online town that continues to exist whether there are 2 people online or 200.
This isn't a dating app. It's a place.
