A Place That's Always There

Loneliness is a difficult feeling.

Especially the loneliness you feel when you're alone at night. It's something that never really gets easier, even as you get older. In fact, I still don't really know how to deal with that feeling myself.

Aren't humans naturally social creatures?

For thousands of years, we've lived in groups, eaten together, talked together, and shared our lives. Yet ironically, now that the entire world is connected through the internet, it seems like we spend more time alone than ever before.

When you're alone, all kinds of thoughts come to mind.

Some people say loneliness can be a driving force for personal growth. They say we should learn to endure time alone, focus on ourselves, and turn that time into success.

Maybe they're right.

But I'm not so sure.

Looking back, the moments when I felt the least lonely weren't when I accomplished something, but when I met new people and had conversations about nothing in particular with friends.

But as we get older, those moments become less and less frequent.

When we were young, we met new people simply by going to school. Friends were around without having to make plans, and we could spend time together without any particular reason.

But things change when we become adults.

Friends go on to live their own lives. They get jobs, start families, and move to different places. Opportunities to meet new people become fewer, and we gradually find ourselves talking to the same familiar people.

One day, a thought occurred to me.

If I just wanted to talk to someone tonight, where would I go?

It's not that I wanted to drink or attend some special gathering. I didn't necessarily want to contact someone and make plans either.

I just wanted to go somewhere with people.

A place where, when you open the door and walk in, some people are talking, some are listening, and someone might be greeting a person who just arrived.

A place where it's okay to do nothing, and where you can join a conversation whenever you want.

I thought it would be nice if a place like that existed.

24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A place that's always there, whenever you decide to visit.

A place where it doesn't matter how old you are, what you do for a living, how much money you make, or what your background is.

A place where you can simply spend time with others as another human being.

And a place you don't even have to leave your home to visit.

There are already countless social networks on the internet. We look at other people's photos, watch videos, and endlessly scroll through their lives.

But watching other people's lives and feeling like you're actually with someone are two different things.

I wanted to create a space where people don't just observe one another, but can actually feel each other's presence.

That's how I started building Bored People Chat.

I don't think I've found a way to solve loneliness. Perhaps loneliness is something we have to carry with us throughout our lives.

But if someone is spending a lonely night, shouldn't there at least be somewhere they can go?

What I want to create isn't simply a chat website.

It's a place you can always come back to, where there's always someone there.
